Can you buy alcohol on Sundays?

I was just wondering what it's like around the country (or world). A referendum just passed in my city that finally allows Sunday beer and wine sales. I'm guessing a lot of parts of the country have already done this, but wanted to see if there are still any hold outs.

In Baltimore, you can buy carry out at the bar, which is awesome.....they're open until 2 AM 7 days a week. The ones I go to basically have a little liquor store that somebody runs adjacent to the main bar itself. You can get your, beer, liquor, smokes, tater chips, the works!!

█████████ 04.02.2008 03:15 PM

why exactly did they forbid beer and wine sales on sundays?

Cantankerous 04.02.2008 03:19 PM

jesus did.

█████████ 04.02.2008 03:22 PM

i can't say exactly. I live in SC, and several areas of the state have laws on the books known as Blue Laws. The no alcohol sales on sunday was part of that, although you could still go to bars and drink in restaurants. There are some even weirder ones than that - like in some counties you can only sell necessity items (food, baby supplies) before 1:30 on Sundays. In those counties, you can go in a Wal-Mart and most of the sections will be roped off until 1:30. We still can't buy liquor after 7 PM. Can't have sports events on Sunday either. Go figure.

you can buy b eer and wine at supermarkets after noon in texas, but all liquor stores are closed. no spirits available on jeebus day, just go to mass and take an extra large chug of tha tasty blood of jeebus.

!@#$%! 04.02.2008 03:48 PM

yes in new mexico but some municipalities have limits

nicfit 04.02.2008 03:54 PM

here you have to get drunk on sunday or they'll come and beat you, so, yeah, you can buy liquors in the open stores, or you could just go to a restaurant and order loads of grappa or something.

Glice 04.02.2008 04:26 PM

Yes here. Although I have to say, regardless of your thinking on the big JC, I do think it's ridiculous that in most of 'civilised' society large amounts of people work on a Sunday. My top tip - if anyone asks you to work a Sunday, play the religion card at they can do very little about it without falling foul of religious discrimination laws. This definitely applies in the UK, can't speak for anywhere else. It's not a water-tight argument by any means, but most employers will quake in fear of God's wrath.

i always liked working on Sundays when I had a job where I could. I was sure to get hours because a lot of people couldn't work. Some places pay time and a half on Sundays too.

█████████ 04.02.2008 04:38 PM

american political culture is really bad.

You're in Columbia? I think most places but our fair city sell alcohol on Sundays. When I lived in Virginia in the 80s, though, they couldn't--I haven't been there since though, so I don't know if they've caught up. For a while there in Virginia, no retail store of any kind except groceries could be open on Sunday. It was dreadful.

Of course, as an inactive-IRR (inactive-immediate-ready-reserve) Air Force captain, I get privileges at Fort Jackson, and as a federal facility, they skirt the town's rules., so I get my alcohol supply on Sunday when we do our grocery shopping. Their liquor store has a fair selection of good beer, and much better prices than in town.
